Bitcoin per share answers one question: if you own one share, how much bitcoin stands behind it? The arithmetic is a single division — bitcoin held ÷ shares outstanding — but each half has its own date, and the answer is only as good as both.
A worked example
Tesla reported 11,509 BTC held as of 2026-06-30. Divide by its filed share count and each share carries 0.00000291 BTC. At the BTC/USD close of 2026-10-23 that is $0.24 of bitcoin per share, against a share that closed at $391.62 on 2026-10-26 — $0.60 of bitcoin for every $1,000 of stock, or 0.06% of the company's market value.
Strategy, for contrast: 848,000 BTC (as of 2026-10-04), 0.00221 BTC per share, about $178.93 of bitcoin per share. A spot ETF gives the cleanest version of the number: GBTC held 125,262 BTC on 2026-10-26, 0.000772 BTC per share, a figure the issuer itself publishes every day.
The dates are half the number
A company states its bitcoin at a date (a quarter-end, or the date of a purchase announcement) and its share count at another (the cover of its latest filing). Between them, it may have bought bitcoin, sold some, issued shares or bought them back. A per-share figure built from a recent holding and an old share count can be off in either direction. That is why CoinBucha prints the holding date and the share-count date beside every bitcoin-per-share figure, and why the figure changes on filing days, not every day.
Which share count
CoinBucha uses the share count the company files (basic shares outstanding on the filing's cover or balance sheet). Some trackers use a fully diluted count — adding convertible debt, warrants and options — which gives a lower bitcoin per share. Neither is wrong; they answer different questions. Compare two trackers only after checking which count each uses.
What it does not tell you
Bitcoin per share measures what stands behind a share, not what the share is worth. A company has debts, other assets, a business and costs; an ETF has a fee. Bitcoin per share says nothing about whether to own either. Information, not financial advice.
